The Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute of Ontario provides innovative neuromotor and physiotherapy rehabilitation services to individuals with motor impairments following brain injury or other neurologic conditions by restoring functional motor skills. Motor ability is maximized through an active integrative coaching process combining physical strengthening, retraining of functional motor skills, and intensive EMG biofeedback.

Goals
To increase functional independence by:

  • Increasing muscle strength and reducing fatigue.
  • Reducing muscle spasm.
  • Improving mobility, agility, stability, and balance.
  • Increasing coordination and speed.

Individuals Served
The Neurologic Rehabilitation Program serves children, adolescents, and adults with mild to severe brain injury or related neurological impairments.

Coma Stimulation Program
nrio offers a comprehensive coma stimulation program within community hospitals. By working closely with hospital staff, we develop a successful stimulation program that focuses on various forms of arousal and stimulation directed towards assisting the individual to respond to stimuli in an increasing and purposeful fashion. nrio provides tactile, auditory, visual, olfactory and proprioceptive sensory stimulation as well as passive range of motion motor stimulation and awareness to surroundings.

Dual Diagnosis Program
nrio has also developed a program for those clients with a brain injury and psychiatric, behavioural or addiction problems.  Our Dual Diagnosis Rehabilitation program addresses the issues in a comprehensive and integrated approach. nrio develops programs for clients with:

    • post traumatic stress disorder
    • post concussive syndrome with cognitive, psychological and behavioural components brain injury with pre or post injury psychiatric/ psychological problems
    • substance abuse/addiction problems

Through our program, our clients can achieve high levels of independence.  The individuals served in the nrio Dual Diagnosis program have often been treated unsuccessfully in rehabilitation and psychiatric programs.
