Residential and Community-based Brain Injury Rehabilitation for Hospital Personnel
In this era of reduced funding and cost controls, hospital personnel are operating with fewer resources and with the expectation that they will continue to get the job done. Rehabilitation units in hospitals are seeing an increased patient flow and with improvements in trauma care, a more complex patient with significant needs is reaching the rehabilitation unit. As patients improve and get ready for discharge, where can they go if they need extended rehabilitation, have complex needs or a dual diagnosis? Who can provide a community-based program? A residential rehabilitation program? Supported Living? Or, outreach in the person’s home? Where can they find a rehabilitation program which has all the required specialty services? What program can offer progressive treatment which can help the person get back to living with independence?
When we started NRIO in 1993, our goal was to create a community-based brain injury rehabilitation program focused on improving the person’s functional capacities and in regaining the skills lost through their injury. Since we opened our doors, we soon realized that some people needed more than a clinic-based program. Thus, we developed outreach, residential, supported living and school re-entry programs to meet the evolving needs of our clients. Over the years, we have used the information obtained from our hospital referral sources and our Outcome Study to continuously enhance our programs to better meet the changing needs of our clients.
Hospital Social Workers and Discharge Planners can rely upon a timely response from NRIO and an easy-to-manage referral process. We conduct preadmission assessments at the referring hospital and can answer the questions that come from the client, their family, the hospital rehabilitation team, the Case Manager and the lawyer about the next step. Clients and their family members and referring professionals are welcome to visit NRIO to see how we deliver rehabilitation services and to meet our team of rehab professionals. When you have an individual who needs the next step in their brain injury rehabilitation, call us, we can help.
