About Our -"Summer in the City" Program-
Our "Summer in the City!" program provides a small-group experience (2-3 students) in which academics, social skills and functional life skills are addressed through "real life" situations and community-based experiences. Students are grouped by age and interests when possible and development of leadership skills and independence within the community is emphasized. Program goals are generated and monitored by the school resource staff and daily activities are delivered by our rehabilitation therapists. The program runs daily between 9:00 and 3:00. Please note that transportation to and from the program is not provided by nrio.
"I had the opportunity to observe the program and to follow the progress of one of the campers. I found it provided excellent opportunities for the campers to develop social communication, interpersonal skills and community re-integration while exploring a variety of exciting leisure activities in the city. The camper-staff ratio ensured close supervision for a teenager with 24 hour attendant care needs. The "Summer in the City" program was a positive experience for my client and I would not hesitate to recommend it to others". Ann Fitzhenry Bedard, M.S., O.T. Reg. (Ont)
"I would highly recommend your camp to children with brain injuries. My 12 year old client raved about the wonderful experiences and new challenges, reports from the rehab team members indicated positive changes in his level of functioning, excellent opportunities and practice to develop language, communication and social skills, appropriate behaviour and to be integrated into the community. The high level of support enabled direct teaching and coaching, contributing to my client's level of functioning in all areas cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically". Mary E. Anderson, B.Sc.N., R.N., M.Sc (N), C.R.R.N.
Current research emphasizes how problematic a two month gap in academics can be for students with acquired brain injury. As such, nrio continues to offer specialized tutorial support on a year round basis. During the summer months, our School Resource Services program continues to offer 1:1 instruction which enables the student to maintain academic skills gained during the school year and to develop new skills for successful transition back to school in September. Tutorial sessions focus on the student's individual learning needs and can be provided at the student's home or at nrio.
This summer we are also providing a program for students who would like to attend a regular day camp in an area of interest, but require support with respect to social interaction, behaviour and participation. Goals are generated and monitored by the School Resource Services Coordinator, and a Rehabilitation Therapist can provide varying levels of support for the student while at the day camp of his or her choice.
